Sharron Robbie MBE, Chief Executive of the Devon & Cornwall Training Providers Network (DCTPN), represented the South West’s skills and training sector at a prestigious parliamentary reception at the House of Lords on 9 February.
The event, hosted by The Rt Hon. Baroness Morgan of Cotes, marked the official start of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, a nationwide celebration of apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on learners, employers, and communities.
The annual parliamentary reception brings together leaders from education, training, business, and government to recognise excellence in apprenticeship delivery and to highlight the vital role providers play in developing the country’s future workforce.
As CEO of DCTPN, Sharron joined key stakeholders from across England to champion the contribution of training organisations in Devon and Cornwall – an area consistently recognised for apprenticeship success, innovation and employer-led skills development.

This year’s reception also welcomed a host of providers, employers and individuals, all of whom have made it through as finalists in the annual FE Week & AELP Apprenticeship and Training Awards, following an intense nomination and judging process.
Celebrating outstanding achievement from across a range of categories the awards recognise the endeavours and successes of apprenticeship providers, employers, and individuals. Winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony to be held in March in Liverpool.
Several DCTPN member organisations, shortlisted as finalists, were in attendance, including the University of Exeter, Exeter College, University Centre Somerset College Group, Learning Curve Group, and Rod Davies, CEO SWATPRO and ex DCTPN Director.

Speaking ahead of the reception, Sharron emphasised the importance of showcasing the strength of regional training networks on a national stage; noting that National Apprenticeship Week provides a crucial opportunity to promote the diverse range of apprenticeship pathways now available, from digital and green technologies to health, engineering, and professional services.
With employers across the Southwest facing ongoing skills shortages, apprenticeships continue to play a pivotal role in supporting business growth and creating sustainable career opportunities for young people and adults.
The House of Lords event is expected to stimulate conversations around policy, funding, and collaboration, particularly as the apprenticeship system evolves to meet future workforce demands. For DCTPN, the event offers a valuable platform to influence discussion, share regional insights, and strengthen partnerships across the national training landscape.
National Apprenticeship Week runs from 9-15 February, featuring events across the country featuring and celebrating apprentices, providers, and employers.
DCTPN will be sharing updates and highlights throughout the week as local providers showcase their impact and open their doors to employers and individuals keen to find out more.
