Frequently Asked Questions

Our Network exists to support people who need training and skills to progress their careers, to help employers who would benefit from improved training and skills and to bring together training providers across the region.

An apprenticeship in the UK is a structured training program that combines on-the-job training with classroom learning. It allows individuals, known as apprentices, to gain practical experience in a specific industry while earning a wage. Apprenticeships typically involve a partnership between the apprentice, an employer, and a training provider. This approach enables individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a particular occupation.

Eligibility criteria for apprenticeships vary, but generally, individuals must be 16 or older and not in full-time education. Specific entry requirements may depend on the industry and level of the apprenticeship. While some apprenticeships may require certain qualifications, others may focus more on aptitude and enthusiasm for the chosen field.

The duration of apprenticeships can vary based on factors such as the level of the apprenticeship and the industry. Apprenticeships in the UK usually last between one to six years. Higher-level apprenticeships or those in specialized sectors may have longer durations. The time is divided between practical, on-the-job training and academic learning.

Apprenticeships lead to a range of qualifications, including National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), BTECs, and industry-recognized certifications. The specific qualifications depend on the apprenticeship standard or framework. Additionally, apprentices often acquire valuable practical skills and experience that enhance their employability within the chosen industry.

A Levels:

  1. Type of Qualification: A Levels, short for Advanced Levels, are traditional academic qualifications.
  2. Duration: Typically a two-year program, taken by students aged 16-18 (post-GCSE).
  3. Structure: A Levels offer a broad and in-depth study of academic subjects. Students usually choose three to four A Level subjects.
  4. Assessment: Assessment is primarily through examinations at the end of the two-year period, although there may be coursework or practical components depending on the subject.
  5. Flexibility: A Levels provide a high degree of flexibility, allowing students to choose subjects across different disciplines.

T Levels:

  1. Type of Qualification: T Levels, short for Technical Levels, are technical and vocational qualifications.
  2. Duration: Also a two-year program, typically taken after completing GCSEs.
  3. Structure: T Levels are more specialized and focus on a particular industry or sector. Each T Level includes a core set of knowledge and skills, as well as an industry placement.
  4. Assessment: Assessment includes a combination of exams and practical assignments. The industry placement is a significant component, providing students with real-world work experience.
  5. Industry Focus: T Levels are designed to prepare students for specific industries and occupations, offering a pathway to employment or further education in that sector.
