Collaborative partnership produces positive results across Devon and Cornwall

The Devon and Cornwall Training Providers Network (DCTPN) enjoys a close working relationship with Jobcentre Plus colleagues from across the region.

Both organisations meet regularly to explore ways in which education, training and skills can support individuals into work, alongside supporting employers in recruiting into their businesses to close skills gaps and grow their workforce.

A recent initiative has seen an innovative programme of training for individuals aged 50 plus who are currently claiming benefits. The programme of activity, which has been running across Plymouth, Exeter and Totnes, has seen several cohorts of unemployed people enrol on a structured programme of learning and training.

In Exeter, three 12-week courses are being offered, delivered in partnership with Exeter College. Participants will gain vital employability and digital skills, including the use of AI, with each participant receiving a digital passport at the end of each course. Various employers attend sessions to provide sector knowledge, to promote current vacancies and to share tips and advice on interview techniques; all of which supports participants in their job seeking endeavours.

In Plymouth, a similar scheme is being run in partnership with Achievement Training, and in Totnes in partnership with South Devon College. There are plans to hopefully roll this initiative out further across Devon and Cornwall.

Training providers have demonstrated exceptional flexibility and innovation, enthusiastically adapting to meet the needs of both customers and the local labour market.

This programme of activity is a great example of how the DCTPN works with other agencies to bring about positive change and impact.

Sharron Robbie, CEO of the DCTPN, said: “We are absolutely committed to supporting the individuals and businesses within our communities in accessing the skills and training they need.

“This 50+ programme has resulted in positive outcomes for individuals who needed support in gaining relevant and up-to-date skills to support their future employability. We have been delighted to have been able to facilitate this work and look forward to seeing it rolled out across other areas of the region.’
