Where are you currently studying, or have you just completed it?
I have completed a CLT programme that included Level 1 Health and Safety in the Construct Environment, CSCS test, Level 1 Employability Skills and an Intro to Bricklaying at the Mayflower Leat Academy in North Prospect. An affordable housing development is currently being built by Countryside Partnerships (part of Vistry Group).
Why did you want to do this work experience placement?
The reason I wanted to do this course is firstly, there are not many women in the trade side of the construction industry, secondly is something new to try and thirdly I could do it for 15 years and I will still only be 35 years old allowing me to explore and progress within other roles in the construction industry if needed. In addition, I have previous skills in sales, customer service and professional cleaning which I believe I can implement in my new career.
Give a brief outline of where you spent your time on your experience.
It was classroom based in the mornings, and practical in the afternoon in the outdoor training area. In addition, our tutor took us out on site and showed us the bits we were covering on our course during our theory sessions. In addition, we really enjoyed the site visit conducted by Rob and chatting with the customer care director Emma to discuss potential employment progression routes and their snagging team who make sure properties are up to standard on handover.
What aspect of the work experience did you find the most interesting?
I found everything rather interesting, having had some insight into the industry, it was good to reinforce my knowledge of up-to-date policy within the health and safety departments and areas in construction. I enjoyed the practical element of the course and getting my hands dirty – I like being hands-on and being active!
What do you think you gained from your experience?
Confidence is what I feel I have really gained during this course, especially due to the tutor’s support and dedication. If it wasn’t for him, I would have not gained the confidence I am walking away with today. Neil has really boosted my confidence in believing in myself and opening the doors of the construction industry. Neil picked me up every time I felt I couldn’t carry on and I will be forever grateful for his dedication.
What are your career aspirations?
I would like to progress into a job role in construction that allows me to be flexible. I like the idea of labouring, property maintenance or snagging. This gives me the chance to not focus on one sole trade but expand my knowledge on other areas that might be of interest. I know I want to do a hands-on job.
What are you doing now?
Since completing my course with Train4All, I have secured a job with GIUK working on Drakes Island as a labourer. I am gaining experience in all areas of construction, moving forward I am hoping to move onto a trade where I can complete an Apprenticeship or an NVQ.
