AI Summit provides valuable insights for South West training providers

More than 80 delegates from across the education, training & skills sector converged upon Petroc’s Tiverton campus recently to attend an AI Summit – titled ‘are you thrilled or are you chilled?’

The event focused on the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it is impacting upon the education sector.

Developed and managed by the Devon & Cornwall Training Providers Network (DCTPN), this free-to-attend event brought together a range of industry professionals and offered a comprehensive exploration of AI’s potential across the education sector.

The Summit was opened by TV personality and self-confessed geek, Jason Bradbury, who made a suitably impressive entrance to the stage via hover board! Jason is renowned for his work in technology and media, and his presentation on the evolution of AI and its impact on daily life captivated the audience, blending humor with profound insights into how AI is reshaping our world.

Dr. Jamie Smith, a leading AI researcher, followed with a deep dive into the ethical implications of AI. His thought-provoking discussion on the importance of ethical AI development emphasized the need for responsible innovation, resonating strongly with both the academic and professional attendees.

Mark Trewin, CEO & Principal at Plymouth City Council, is an expert in educational technology, and he highlighted how AI can revolutionize learning environments. His presentation on adaptive learning systems and AI-driven educational tools showcased practical applications that can enhance student engagement and outcomes.

Delegates also heard from network members Ascentis & Metaverse, which brought a fascinating perspective on the integration of AI in virtual reality. Their demonstration of immersive VR experiences powered by AI provided a glimpse into the future of interactive learning and training environments, sparking considerable excitement among the participants.

The Summit also welcomed Shane Chowen, Editor of FE Week – Shane focused on the policy implications of AI in education and employment. As an advocate for education reform, his insights into how AI can bridge skills gaps and create new job opportunities were both inspiring and pragmatic. Shane also gave delegates food for thought around how educationalists can best harness AI so that it is used by learners in a responsible and proper manner.

The Summit was rounded off by Julie Hawker, Chief Executive at Cosmic – one of the region’s leading social enterprises which has delivered against its mission to ensure digital technologies benefit everyone in society for over 27 years! Julie focused on how AI is being used within the business community and how this is impacting on the skills that employer require.

Feedback from delegates has been amazing with Briony Allen from the University of Exeter commenting: “Really engaging speakers talking about such a relevant topic.” Ben ‘Franky’ Franklin, BIT Training, added: “This is a fantastic chance to discuss both the present challenges and opportunities of technology, as well as forward looking into its exciting future.”

With such a resounding success, the DCTPN have already started preparations for AI (2) an interactive workshop where delegates will be able to share best practice and hear from AI specialists from across teaching and learning.
